Overview

Public sector leaders seeking senior manager or Senior Executive Service (SES) positions must demonstrate proficiency in the Executive Core Qualifications (ECQs) and confidence as a federal executive. This interactive course benchmarks leaders' abilities and reinforces specific skills required of federal executive leaders in government today. This course uses the Challenge, Context, Action, and Results (CCAR) model to help you develop a personal strategy for effectively communicating your abilities as a high-level public sector leader.

How You Will Benefit

Through interactive presentations, small-group work, and practical application, you will learn how the Executive Core Qualifications (ECQs) apply to your current work as well as help you prepare for the Senior Executive Service (SES). In this course, you will:

  • Learn techniques and best practices to write your ECQs using the Challenge, Context, Action, and Results (CCAR) model.
  • Create a personalized plan for ongoing leadership development to gain experiences across the ECQs.
  • Identify pathways for applying to the SES.
  • Receive a benchmark of your current leadership abilities and coaching on the results of your OPM Leadership 360(TM), an ECQ assessment instrument.
  • Receive a benchmark and feedback from your Entrepreneurial Mindset Profile® (EMP) assessment.
  • Gain perspective on what to expect as a federal Executive and inter-relatedness with ECQs.
  • Build peer networks with like-minded professionals who aspire to become SES.

Who Should Attend

The course is designed for GS-14 and GS-15 (or equivalents) aspiring to join the Senior Executive Service (SES), including those in a SES Candidate Development Program; supervisors and managers; executives and Senior Leaders (non-SES).

Additional Information

Participants must attend all sessions and complete prework which includes two assessments and the writing and submission of one ECQ narrative. Time will be provided during class for additional assignments to minimize the impact outside of regular course hours.

This course includes the OPM Leadership 360(TM) assessment to provide you the opportunity to receive feedback from supervisors, peers, and others to promote self-awareness, identify strengths and opportunities for improvement, and create an action plan for your professional development. This course also includes the Entrepreneurial Mindset Profile® (EMP) assessment tool to provide you with understanding of your entrepreneurial traits and skills, vital self-awareness for Federal executives.
