What

Inspiring and Engaging a High-Performing 21st Century Workforce accelerates your effectiveness as a new Federal Senior Executive to strategically lead your most critical resource — people — with an enterprise mindset and change management toolkit suited to leveraging talent strategies in service to the American people.

Why

Federal Senior Executives lead America's dynamic workforce, continuously inspiring, engaging, empowering, and aligning employees to ensure mission success.

Most Federal Executives know that the nature of work itself is changing, and that the Federal workforce in the 21st century is also changing as it becomes more multisector multicultural, intergenerational, intergovernmental, international, dispersed and virtual.

But what does it mean to make talent management a strategic priority?  How do today's senior leaders and executive leadership teams create results-oriented cultures of engagement, accountability, and high performance during transitions and transformational changes?  How are senior leaders using evidence and shaping resilient human capital systems so that the agency is attracting, developing and retaining world-class talent to meet current and future agency priorities efficiently and effectively?

How You
Will Benefit

During this SES Onboarding Forum for new Federal Senior Executives, you will:

  • Dialogue with enterprise leaders about how they inspire and engage a diverse and dispersed workforce throughout the most demanding periods of transformational change
  • Assess and apply strategies to leverage your senior executive role to lead a great place to work that operates with the responsiveness and flexibility needed to best accomplish various missions
  • Explore and discuss examples of how and why Federal Senior Executives prioritize talent management in their strategic planning and decision making to better align their workforce to desired results
  • Collaborate with peers and experienced Federal Senior Executives to expand networks and apply insights and tips

An agenda and other materials to prepare for the Forum will be sent to registered participants a few days prior to the program.

Information
about the SES

Meaning of
“SES equivalent”

SES positions are those within the executive branch of the Federal government that are classified above the GS-15 level, or an equivalent position, which is not required to be filled by Presidential appointment with Senate confirmation, and in which the incumbent:

  • Directs the work of an organizational unit;
  • Is held accountable for the success of one or more specific programs or projects;
  • Monitors progress toward organizational goals, and periodically evaluates and makes appropriate adjustments to such goals;
  • Supervises the work of employees other than personal assistants; or
  • Otherwise exercises important policy-making, policy-determining, or other executive functions.

There are Federal agencies with legislation (e.g., Title 10, Title 38, and Title 42) that permits hiring into executive service positions for specialized skills (e.g. law enforcement and defense intelligence and medical specialties) paid above GS-15 that are not in the SES (QRB-certified), ST (Scientific or Professional), or SL (Senior Level) pay plans. The SES Leading EDGE Onboarding Forums are appropriate for such SES-equivalent positions.

Also click here for OPM information on ST (Scientific or Professional) and SL (Senior Level) positions that are included in our definition of SES-equivalents.
